Another faceless room and another long, drawn out wait. Martha, usually the voice of reason and sensibility, couldn't muster up enough of her usual calm to be still. She paced back and forth near the door, while the others sprawled on the couches, tucking in to the free snacks and drinks.
âYou canât help yourself, can you Helen?â asked Geri. âIf thereâs a free sandwich, free packet of crisps, free lecture on the breeding habits of the star-nosed moleâyouâll be front and centre.â
âYou what?â asked Helen, speaking with her mouth full.
âJust look at you,â Geri pointed at the empty packets and crushed cans littered about Helenâs feet. âYouâve ravaged the spread here in record time. You canât help yourself.â
âI havenât eaten anything since breakfast,â said her sister, draining a bottle of water. âAnd besides, itâs not like weâre not supposed to eat and drink this stuff. Itâs a spread, thatâs what itâs there for. Right?â
Geri shook her head. She folded her arms and kicked her legs over the arm of her chair. Turning to Martha, she let out a sigh.
âSo whatâs wrong with you then?â she asked. âSeems like Iâm the village problem solver this afternoon.â
âNothingâs wrong,â said Martha, deep in thought. âNothing more than the obvious.â
âObviously,â droned Geri. âI have fifty pence in my pocket that tells me youâre worried, stressed and anxious all at once, Mart. And I donât have to be a detective of world famous proportions to know that. The threadbare line youâve worn in the carpet is enough.â
Martha hopped a little and looked down at her feet. The carpet was fine.
âMade you look,â laughed Geri.
âVery good,â said Martha. âFine, yes, somethingâs wrong. Somethingâs always wrong with us. I just canât let it all go. Not until weâre out of this, cleanly, with nothing hanging over us.â
âSheâs trying to say itâs your fault Geri,â said Helen, reaching over for a free banana. âSheâs just too polite to say it in as matter-of-fact a way as I would.â
âThatâs not true,â said Martha. âWell, it is true, of course Iâm worried about Geri. But itâs not your fault Geri. Not at all.â
Helen shrugged and peeled her banana. Geri remained worryingly quiet. She kicked the side of her chair with her heels. Letting her head lie back on the opposite arm, staring up at the ceiling.
âWho would have thought trying to further your career would cause so much bloody trouble,â she said, wistfully. âAnd one night humouring an old man would see me in the frame for murder.â
âItâs not that bad Geri, donât say things like that,â said Martha. âThatâs why weâre here. Weâre setting the record straight and youâll cooperate with the police.â
âAs long as they donât realise it was her who stole one of their hats,â said Helen.
Geri threw a cushion at her sister.
âA minor indiscretion,â she said. âBut worth it in the end.â
She swung her legs back over the arm of the chair. Resting her elbows on her knees, she drummed her fingers against her cheeks.
âDo you think Roberta will play ball?â she asked the others.
